Amy Cutler Guest Mix

“This mix basically has two influences. Firstly, a project I’m working on currently with the composer Paul Zaba inspired by what we have nicknamed the Bremenbots, which is a robot training choir for shape note singers. There’s a strange pathos – or perhaps more accurately bathos – to listening to chiptune style synthetic voices singing seventeenth century harmonies about seasons and mortality, as well as to re-processing them in analogue ways.”

“The second influence is something I read on NASA’s public sound archives recently. A note amongst their recordings described the Perseverance microphone stowed on the rover’s mast on the first “sol” or Martian day as having a muffled sound, a bit like listening to a seashell or cupping a hand over your ear and hearing only the wind. I liked the idea of holding a seashell to your ear on Mars. The second section runs with this idea in a corny way (“are there ghosts on Mars???”), with a medley of phonograph records heard as if from another planet in the future. It ends with a sample from ‘Kinds of Flowers’ from the real Voyager Golden Record which was sent out into space.”

“The rest of the mix falls in line by moving between small garden pastorals and dawning existential horror, in a way which I exclusively associate with tape cassettes. I picked the first sample because of how hilariously pathetic it is – ‘just one leaf, that’s all that there is now’. What a sad state of affairs!” – Amy Cutler
